Best sports and activities for children in Everton Park and beyond

If you’re the parent of a little one, you’ll know that they have energy to burn! Luckily for us, there’s a great range of fun and engaging sports and activities designed for children in and around Everton Park.

Enrolling your little one in an activity isn’t just a great way for them to be active and have fun — it’s also a fantastic way for them to connect with other kids, grow their confidence, and work on communication skills. Here’s a look at some of the best options for local families.

Little Kickers, Everton Park

Designed specifically for young children aged 18 months to 8 years, Little Kickers introduces soccer through fun, movement, and imaginative play — with a philosophy of “play not push” at its core.

Right here in Everton Park, Little Kickers Brisbane Inner North runs classes at the Everton Park Bowls and Community Club (next to the Everton Park Library) every Tuesday, with Little Kicks, Junior Kickers, and Mighty Kickers sessions on offer — plus a second local venue at the Sports Hall of Everton Park State High School. Classes are split into four age-specific groups so kids are always playing alongside others at a similar stage of development.

Sessions are also designed to complement Australia’s Early Years Learning Framework, so kids aren’t just learning to kick a ball — they’re building broader early learning and social skills along the way. The emphasis isn’t on competition. It’s on developing a love of movement and sport — which is exactly what young children need.

MyFirstGym, Enoggera

MyFirstGym has become increasingly popular with Brisbane families, and it’s easy to see why. Located just around the corner from Everton Park in Enoggera, the program combines fitness, movement, and skill development in a fun, energetic environment — with over 60 different classes on offer, including gymnastics, dance, martial arts, ninja warrior, and parkour.

Programs cater to kids from as young as 7 months right through to age 15, from Baby Explorers (7–12 months) focusing on motor skills and early coordination, to Dingo Pups (around age 4), through to ongoing classes for older kids and teens that build on strength, coordination, and confidence as they grow. MyFirstGym Enoggera also hosts birthday parties, with exclusive use of the facility and dedicated party hosts — a popular option for local families looking for an active alternative to the usual party venue.

PCYC Hills District

PCYC Hills District, based at Everton Hills, offers a wide range of programs for children of different ages and interests, all run in partnership with the Queensland Police Service and the local community.

Families can explore gymnastics (typically from toddler age through to teens), martial arts such as judo, aikido, jiu-jitsu, and Muay Thai kickboxing (usually suited to primary and high school–aged kids), sport programs like basketball, badminton, futsal, and boxing, Little n Active for developing physical literacy in younger children, and school holiday activities and youth programs for kids across the board.

One of the biggest benefits of PCYC is variety. With so many activities under one roof, children can experiment with different sports and programs before finding the one that suits them best — without needing to commit to several different clubs. PCYC Hills District has been running in the area since 1991, and memberships are generally low-cost, with some community programs offered free of charge.

Everton Wolves AFL

For families interested in Australian Rules Football, Everton Wolves provides opportunities for children to become involved in a supportive community environment, with programs generally spanning Auskick for younger children through to junior teams for primary and high school–aged kids.

The club’s philosophy centres on maximum participation rather than prioritising winning above player welfare and development. Junior sports like this can help children develop friendships that extend well beyond the sporting field.

YMCA Gymnastics Stafford

Gymnastics is one of the most beneficial foundation activities for young children, and YMCA Gymnastics Stafford offers a full pathway for local kids, from crawling age through to 13 years, with youth classes for those 14 and up, and adult classes also available.

It supports strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, and body awareness, with programs ranging from beginner “Steps” classes through to Tumblefun, Rhythmic Gymnastics, a Ninja program, and competitive squads for those wanting to take things further. Classes are run by Gymnastics Australia–accredited instructors, and beyond the physical skills, kids build self-confidence, personal responsibility, and friendships along the way. Many children who participate in gymnastics develop physical skills that transfer successfully into other sports later in life.

Shapland Swim School, Everton Park

Living in Queensland means swimming is more than just a sport. It’s a life skill.

Shapland Swim School Everton Park (our lovely neighbours!) has been run as a genuine family affair since 2007. Programs cater to children from babies as young as a few months old through to school age, with lessons for adults also available.

What sets Shapland apart is its small-class approach — a maximum of three pupils per class, so kids get far more individual attention — in a pool heated to 32°C year-round. All instructors hold industry qualifications including CPR, First Aid, and Blue Card certification, and the facility is Swim Australia registered. Swimming remains one of the most valuable activities children can participate in, and a stable, familiar teacher can make all the difference in building a child’s confidence in the water.
