One of the biggest questions or concerns new parents have when it comes to transitioning their little one to a nursery, daycare, or childcare setting is about sleep: Will they sleep ok? Will they settle without me? What if they need their dummy, their blanket, their exact bedtime routine to relax?
Speaking from personal experience as a mum of two, thinking about their sleep ironically kept me up at night. And I get it — sleep impacts everyone in the family, and there are so many unknowns going into a childcare setting for the first time.
We hope this article settles some concerns and gives you some insights into what to expect!
Worried about sleep? We get it
At Little Navigators Everton Park, sleep is one of the most common concerns we hear from parents before their child even starts with us. It makes sense. At home, you’ve probably built a whole little ecosystem around your baby’s sleep: blackout blinds to block out the afternoon sun, white noise to drown out household sounds, a specific swaddle, a particular song, a routine you’ve refined day after day. It’s taken time and trial and error to get there, so the idea of handing that over to someone new can feel daunting.
Your routine, followed closely
Before your little one starts, we’ll ask you to walk us through their sleep routine in detail — nap times, settling preferences, comfort items, feeding schedules, the lot. We use this to build a plan for your child that closely mirrors what they’re used to at home. Consistency helps babies and toddlers feel safe, and our educators are experienced in following individual routines closely, adjusting as your little one grows and settles in.
We encourage parents to pack a dummy, comforter, or specific sleep sack your little one prefers. Familiar items like these can make a big difference in helping your little one feel safe and settled during nap times, especially in those first few weeks.
Contact naps and sleeping on-the-go
If your little one contact naps, or only falls asleep in the car or pram, that’s really common — and it’s not something to stress about before they start with us. We’ll work closely with you to understand their current habits and gently help them adjust to napping in a cosy cot in our nursery. Sometimes all it takes is someone else — a different set of arms, a fresh environment, and a consistent routine can make it easier for your little one to learn to settle in ways they might not at home. Our educators are patient and experienced with this exact transition, and we’ll keep you updated on how it’s going every step of the way.
Our space is designed to feel calm and homely
We know our nursery won’t be an exact replica of your home, but we’ve designed our sleep spaces to be soft, calm and soothing: gentle lighting, quiet corners, and an environment built around comfort. Our educators are attentive and responsive, offering the same warmth and reassurance you would at home when your little one is drifting off or waking from a nap.
The surprise most parents have in common
Here’s something we hear time and time again from families once their child has settled in: “I was so anxious about this, and they adapted so much faster than I expected.” Children are remarkably adaptable, especially when they’re supported by consistent routines and caring, familiar faces.
Children are also taking in their surroundings, and watching what their friends are doing in childcare too — seeing their peers settle in for a nap or relax at rest time often helps them feel more comfortable following along by themselves.
Sleep, rest and comfort are foundational to your little one’s wellbeing, and it’s something our whole team at Little Navigators Everton Park takes seriously. If you’d like to chat about your bub’s routine, book a tour, or simply ask questions before your little one starts, we’d love to hear from you.
