Take it outside – the benefits of nature play for babies and toddlers

We’ve all been there. A rainy weekend rolls in and your little ones start to bounce off the walls. There’s something about being trapped inside that turns children a little wild by mid-afternoon.

And is it any surprise?

There’s something magical about children playing in the sunshine. And now, we have the science to explain just how great the great outdoors can be for them.

The outdoors are often dubbed as nature’s playground – ready to stimulate the senses, calm the nervous system, and supply a healthy dose of Vitamin D.

What is nature play?

It’s as simple as children enjoying unstructured outdoor play – not an organised sport or activity. This is where imaginations can run wild turning sticks into swords, leaves into yummy soups, and gumnuts into precious stones.

And while it goes by many names including natural play, ecological play and outdoor play, the science-backed benefits of nature-based play are in.

What are the upsides?

Where do we start! According to numerous studies, spending time in nature can improve your child’s physical and mental health, sleep, resilience and learning.

Here’s three ways nature play can support babies and toddlers:

  1. It’s an immunity booster: The Vitamin D from the sun and microorganisms found in nature pack a powerful punch against viruses and infections.
  1. It supports their brain: Time in nature can help develop problem-solving skills, concentration and attention spans. It also helps reduce anxiety and depression.
  1. It helps coordination: The outdoors is a natural playground of surfaces. This is perfect for little ones to practice walking, crawling, climbing and jumping.

How much time should babies and toddlers spend outside?

While it’s hard to pin down a number, there are some general guidelines.

For babies under 12 months, you want to aim for frequent, shorter periods outside. Plan for around two to three times a day so they can enjoy fresh air and natural light without overexposure.

Toddlers (aged 1 to 3) can handle longer stretches outside. Many experts recommend around three hours of play each day with the majority of that time outside.

What about the UV risks?

Little Navigators is a SunSmart centre, so we know the importance of protecting fragile young skin. Before you venture into the sunshine, make sure your kids are wearing a hat and sunscreen. Also keep an eye on the UV – it’s typically highest between 10am and 2pm.

What if you don’t prioritise nature play activities?

Less time outdoors means less overall movement – this could be up to 2000 less steps a day for young children. It’s also linked to health-related issues like Vitamin D deficiency, as well as attention and mental health struggles.

How do we switch the screen for more green?

Get to know your local playground, nature trails, beaches and even ovals. These make the perfect backdrop for scavenger hunts, a kick-around, or child-led discovery play.

Once you’ve picked your natural playground, it’s as simple as popping on your shoes and heading out the door. See you out there!
